Small Busienss Server 2003
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 is the network solution
for small business designed specifically to address the needs of
companies with less than 75 workstations. It is an all-in-one solution
that runs off a single dedicated server.
It provides:
- file and printer sharing to
Windows desktop clients with
domain security (through Microsoft Windows Server 2003)
- email services (through
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003)
- Microsoft Outlook 2003
licenses for desktop email access
- shared fax allows
users to fax from their desktop
- team calloboration (through
Microsoft Sharepoint services)
- software firewall support
(through Routing and Remote
Access)
- Group Policy Management
Console
- Interactive "wizards" for
easy management
- Report cabality on web
usage, email usage, events and
backups
- desktop remote access though
Remote Web Workplace
There is also a Premium Edition that additionally provides:
- ISA Server 2004 (proxy
server)
- SQL Server 2000 (for
databases)
- FrontPage 2003 licenses (for
webpage creation)
The parts of Small Business Server (Microsoft Windows Server 2003,
Exchange Server 2003, etc...) are also sold separately but if you can
live within the limitations of the Small Business Server then the Small
Business Server is by far the best value.
The limitations are as follows:
- 75 users/devices maximum
- two physical
processors or four virtual
processors (this won't be a problem for most servers)
- 4GB RAM maximum (same as
Windows 2003 Server)
- maximum of 4
faxmodems (same as Windows 2003
Server)
- all of the "parts" must be
installed on the same server
- support for only only domain
(you cannot create distinct
divisions within the company)
Generally, there is one charge for the Microsoft Windows Small
Business
Server 2003 bundle that includes 5 client licenses. Additional licenses
are purchased separeately and it includes access to all of the
components and features above.
Less expensive solutions can also be created using just Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 if the additional features of Small Business Server
are not required.
